Last Day!!

Image
It was here. Our final day exploring the hidden metropolis that is British Columbia.  The crew assembled in the lobby of the lovely Royal Scot hotel where we met up with our fearless leader, Ms. Ducharme. Our first stop was the stunning parliament building. Nicolas, a jubilant tour guide, walked us through the rich history of both Victoria and British Columbia. We then came to arguably the most important room in BC, the Legislative chamber. This is where it all happens. Every British Columbian resident can view the chamber live to watch their elected officials debate, discuss and decide what the future of the province holds. We ended the tour with a Q&A with Nicolas which allowed us to take a deeper dive into our respective research topics. Personally, I was able to hear different perspectives on the economic impact the new environmental policies would produce.   Hungry and under-caffeinated we wandered around the parliament building looking for the BC Legislative dining r...

A Victorious Victorian Venture

Image
March 10 Our Vancouver Island Thursday adventure began with a sick diner joint– Floyd’s Diner. We were greeted with trendy tunes in the background and a combination of modern and 50s retro decor. I ordered “The Mahoney”, a random dish from the back of the kitchen. What arrived was a thick layer of golden potatoes topped by four fluffy pancakes with ham and scallions mixed into the dough. On top of that , a layer of 4 sunny side up eggs. Unfortunately, I failed to defeat the wonderful monstrosity, but soon enough it was time for us to do some walking…to the van! After a scenic drive through the deep green mountains of the island, we arrived to a hidden Eden: The Butchart Gardens. Originally a limestone quarry, the unused site began to transform starting in 1904 by the efforts of Jennie Butchart. Like many other BC places we’ve visited, the gardens still continue to display remnants of the past. Unexpectedly, one can find cultural diversity blossoming even in what began as a woman’s back...

Global Studies: Raiders of Vancouver Island

Image
March 9  (The most photogenic Global Studies group takes on the open waters.) Our final day in the metropolis city of Vancouver began with a 9 am exit from our accommodations at the Burrard Hotel. However, many of the Global Studies travelers like myself and my roommate were up much earlier, packing all of our newly acquired gifts acquired at various stops into our already stuffed suitcases. We met as a group as we usually did in the lobby shortly after nine; however, this time, the group was met with the face of our compatriot who had spent the last day traveling to Vancouver after his unfortunate bout with a stomach bug. With all of our bags heavier than before, we set out for the Harbor, where we would eventually take off in a seaplane, potentially being the MVM (most valuable moment) of our trip. We strolled down Burrard Street infused with the everyday Vancouverites. During this stroll down the bustling street of Burrard, I saw a handful of school buses picking local ch...

Big City, Small Dogs

Image
March 8  Vancouver, British Columbia Our second day here in British Columbia started off in a petite bakery, Breka, around the corner from our hotel. It was at this point, once fueled up and after our first of many small dog sightings, we started our adventure: the first stop being the Museum of Anthropology! Instead of our usual long walks, we opted to take the bus and get a different perspective of the city and its beautiful architecture. On our first day we began to notice a bizarre phenomenon, seemingly endless numbers of very small dogs yapping about the city. I decided to do a small dog counter today, which tallied up to an astonishing 31 small dogs.  Strolling around the campus of UBC we entered the museum greeted by carvings of all sorts. The indigenous artifacts were both intricately beautiful and delicate, while the grand totem poles that lined the walls and filled up an entire room seemed indestructible yet so thoughtful. Complimented by the rich history of cultures...

Big Trees and Lots of Glass

Image
March 7 2022 We started at the coffee shop at 8:30, getting ready for the packed day ahead. Most of us got breakfast sandwiches and coffee, and we headed to the bus stop that would take us to the Capilano suspension bridge. We walked on the bridge, taking all of the routes the boardwalk offered us whilst enjoying the breathtaking views of the evergreen trees and the steep drops of the cliffs.  Jake and Yasmin both got Beaver Balls from the park cafe which tasted like little pancakes! We also hit the gift shop later on. We then took the bus back to the city and then went to our lunch spot, a compact space with amazing tacos and burritos. This picture is of a non-invasive platform that was constructed for walking. The clamping system does not hurt the tree and it is also adjustable (with screws on the side) in order to compensate for the growing tree.   After fueling up we took the Aquabus to Granville Island where we explored the markets.  There was a fine selection...

We are in Vancouver!

Image
Here is a picture from our pool lot departure at 10:30 AM before we embarked on 16+ hours of travel adventures. We had a long day of travel with some flight delays and extended flight times due to extreme head winds. But, we landed safely at Vancouver airport around 10:30 PM (1:30 AM EST) and made our way to the hotel. We are all in rooms to get some rest before a big first day tomorrow.   Devon Ducharme

And...we're off!!

We cannot believe it is finally here - but we are heading to the airport shortly to fly to Vancouver! Annotated bibliographies are done...research questions for the trip are in our notebooks...we are ready. We will depart from Boston (Logan airport) heading to Vancouver via Denver. Our final destination tonight will be the Burrard Hotel in downtown Vancouver which will be our home for three nights. We will explore Vancouver through its city streets, rainforest, museums, and much more. Students will report in nightly about their days here on this blog and we will share out as many photos as we can along the journey. Our days will be long and full of adventure, but we will check in each night once we are settled back at the hotel. If we cannot post, one of the chaperones will send out an email update. I had the pleasure of exploring Vancouver and Victoria this fall on the scouting trip. I have included a few photos below to give you a taste of what is to come for this group of adventurou...
